California Shooting is Yet Another Reminder of Rampant Gun Violence in the US
This week’s mass shooting in San Bernadino, Calif., is a gruesome reminder of how rampant gun violence is in the United States. Unfortunately, Americans are getting reminded of this fact far too often.
In 2013, there was a mass shooting at least once a day — every day — for the entire year in the United States. The current mass shooting event tally for 2015 in the US is. According to Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a not for profit organization that calculates accurate information about gun-related violence in the United States, 342 people were murdered in mass shootings in 2015 while another 1,207 were injured in these incidents. (These figures are accurate as of noon on Dec. 3, 2015.)
In New Jersey, gun laws are particularly harsh. If you get charged with any of the following weapons-related crimes, you will be facing the potential of serious consequences including up to 10 years in prison. This is true even if it’s your first offense.
- Illegal possession of a firearm: You must have a valid permit or firearms license ISSUED BY THE STATE OF NJ, in order to carry a handgun, machine gun, rifle, shotgun, or other firearm here.
- Unlawful possession of a weapon: Other weapons require valid NJ permits, as well.
- Possession of paintball guns, BB guns, and Airsoft guns: It’s illegal to own an air gun or spring gun without a permit.
- Certain persons offenses: You may not possess a gun if you have been convicted of a violent crime.
- NJ law criminalizes the possession of air guns and spring guns without a lawful permit.
- Unlawful disposition of a firearm: You may not make, transport, sell or ship dangerous weapons within NJ.
