Police Arrest Atlantic City Teen Accused of Shooting at Jitney Bus

An Atlantic City NJ teenager was recently arrested for allegedly using a handgun to fire gunshots at a jitney on a city street.

The very serious criminal incident reportedly occurred just after 5:00 p.m. on the 1100 block of Adriatic Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The victim, a local woman, was seated in a jitney bus that was traveling along the roadway when the suspect allegedly fired several bullets at the motor vehicle. The bullets went through the windshield and caused glass and debris to fly into the victim, who sustained minor injuries as a result of being struck by the glass.

Afterwards, the suspect allegedly ran off and fled the scene on foot. By the time AC police officers arrived, the suspect was long gone. Atlantic City detectives investigated the shooting incident and were able to locate a number of shell casings on the ground near the jitney.

The Atlantic City Police Department Violent Crimes Unit asked the public for assistance with investigation and later received a tip about the suspect. Two days after the shooting, detectives tracked down the suspect on the 200 block of North South Carolina Avenue and placed him under arrest.

The suspect is a 17-year-old resident of Atlantic City. He has been charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, illegal possession of a handgun, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

If the juvenile suspect is ultimately tried as an adult and convicted of third degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, he could potentially be sentenced to a term of incarceration of 3-5 years in NJ State Prison.

After being arrested and charged, the suspect was taken to the Harborfields detention facility, an Atlantic County youth detention center where criminal suspects between the ages of 12 and 18 typically await court review. Since the suspect is a juvenile, it is likely that he will remain in a youth detention facility until his case is resolved or he is released to the custody of an adult guardian or parent.
